About Callicvol Quilts

Callicvol Quilts is located in a purpose-built studio occupying the upper half of a new building. It takes full advantage of the natural light and the views from its windows are a constant delight and inspiration - even in the winter storms.

You may be surprised to find a quilt studio at the northern tip of the Outer Hebrides - but what better situation could there be? We can look out on the ever-changing colours in all seasons and re-create the Hebridean landscape in terms of patterns, shapes and moods. The variety of objects from birds (wild geese on the croft, gannets diving in the bay) to prehistoric structures ask to be interpreted in quilt designs. Here, in the Isle of Lewis with our panoramic views of the heavens, the sky is not the limit!

Quiltmaker Janet Robson has derived much pleasure from fabric, pattern and colour since her early childhood days. This later led on to a keen interest in home decoration and soft furnishings, which then developed into a passion for patchwork and quilting that began almost three decades ago. Along with this came the pleasure of meeting people and talking over enthusiasms in common.

Most of our quilts and quilted items are made to orders placed by visitors in person, by telephone or email. Personal contact and discussion on subject, pattern, colours and so on means that unique items form the majority of our work and set challenges that ensure we do not lapse into dull and conventional products.

One of these challenges has been the scope offered by introducing a range of speciality products using Scottish clan tartans. Over 600 tartans are available in pure wool, over 60 in polyester/viscose (furnishing weight) and a much more limited number in cotton and polyester/cotton. We can therefore provide you with the tartan, or combination of tartans, of your choice as a feature of your quilt or quilted item, together with supporting information described below.

Tartans

The building's ground floor is devoted to making available to visitors our unique collections of books, maps, documents and photographs/pictures relating to the Hebrides, Highlands and Scottish Borders [email archive@10callicvol.com]. These collections are all available for consultation free of charge and supply historical detail on, among other things, clans, tartans and places to explore throughout the relevant areas. If therefore you request a quilt composed of one or more tartans you can see the rarest and most interesting books on the subject and, if you wish, receive information from them on the tartans used and the associated families.

His quilts with country fame were crown'd,
So neatly stitch'd, and all the ground
Adorn'd with flowers, or figured round,
Oh, clever Joe the Quilter!
